Toast Like a Pro: Wedding Speech Dos and Don'ts

Giving a wedding speech is a special honor—but let’s be honest, it can also be a little nerve-wracking. Whether you're the best man, maid of honor, a parent, or a close friend, a great speech is heartfelt, memorable, and just the right amount of funny. Here are some simple dos and don’ts to help you nail it:

DOs:

1. Keep it Short and Sweet- Aim for 3–5 minutes. Long speeches lose attention—make your moment meaningful and memorable.

2. Speak from the Heart- Share a genuine story or sentiment. A personal touch always connects more than a generic one.

3. Practice Ahead of Time- Even if you’re a confident speaker, practicing will help your delivery feel smooth and natural. Preparing a script or discussion points will help keep you on track.

4. Include Both Partners- Even if you know one person better, make sure to welcome and celebrate their partner, too.

5. End with a Toast- Wrap things up by raising a glass and inviting everyone to toast the happy couple. Remember to bring your glass up to the podium with you!

DON’Ts:

1. Don’t Overdo the Inside Jokes- If most of the guests won’t get the reference, it’s better to skip it or explain briefly.

2. Don’t Mention Exes or Embarrassing Stories- Keep it classy—no awkward tales or anything that could make the couple (or guests) cringe.

3. Don’t Wing It- Even if you think you speak well off the cuff, a few notes or a full script goes a long way.

4. Don’t Make It About You- It’s tempting to tell your whole friendship history—but keep the focus on the couple and their love story. Quickly share with the guests who you are, and move on.

5. Don’t Forget to Smile and Breathe- Take your time, breathe, and enjoy the moment—it’s a celebration, not a performance.

With a little preparation and a lot of heart, your wedding speech can be one of the highlights of the day. Cheers! 🥂
